Forward Deployed Engineering makes AI answerable to the work

By StarApple AI Editorial Desk

The FDE discipline connects model, data and workflow decisions to measured performance in a real environment.

Engineering beyond the model boundary

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) works alongside the people using a system and integrates technology into an actual workflow. In AI, the job reaches beyond model selection: it includes data provenance, interfaces, permissions, evaluation, deployment, monitoring and handover.

A technically capable model can still fail if evidence is stale, an interface hides uncertainty or nobody owns ongoing evaluation. FDE work makes those operational dependencies visible during design.

Treat evaluation as product design

Translate a goal into representative examples and acceptance criteria. For a knowledge assistant, check retrieval against authoritative sources, test unsupported questions and record whether people can verify the response. Predictive systems require different measures and risk controls.

Test across the cases and users that matter, not only a convenient demo set. Document data rights, failure modes and dependencies. If evidence does not support deployment, narrowing or stopping can be the correct engineering result.

A system has value when it can be operated

Deployment needs a runbook, an owner, monitoring and a safe way to update or roll back. FDEs help make these details visible while the system is being designed.

StarApple AI’s Forward Deployed Engineer for AI course develops the applied skills behind this work: problem framing, architecture, grounded AI, supervised workflows, evaluation and handover.
