Why No One Else Was Going to Build It

The Caribbean's AI gap in 2022 was not hard to explain. The region spans more than forty islands, 45 million people, and over a dozen separate regulatory environments. Caribbean nations have varying digital infrastructure, limited venture capital, and no large domestic technology company to anchor a commercial AI partnership. The investment case for a US or UK AI company to build Caribbean-specific products did not work at the spreadsheet level. The addressable market was real but fragmented; the commercial risk was high.

The problems, though, were visible. An estimated 40 percent of Caribbean adults are unbanked or underbanked. They have mobile phones, they make payments, they receive remittances, and they have financial histories that exist in forms no credit model can read. Caribbean life insurers operate on actuarial tables built from mortality data that is decades old and often incomplete. Caribbean businesses from Kingston to Georgetown are running processes manually that AI could handle in minutes. The tools available were built without the Caribbean in mind and fail at the contextual level where Caribbean conditions diverge from the US or UK norm.

Adrian Dunkley incorporated StarApple AI in Kingston in 2023. Not because the market conditions were obvious. Because the conditions for building were finally good enough: foundation models had lowered the technical barrier, cloud compute was accessible even from slower Caribbean connections, and the problems were clear and specific. The absence of competition was not a warning sign. It was an opening.

What StarApple AI Actually Built

In two years, Maestro AI Labs, the research and product arm of StarApple AI, shipped six distinct products.

Harmonics is an AI agent framework designed for Caribbean enterprise. It processes real-time financial and operational data, detects anomalies, and operates with Caribbean-specific context layers that tell it where it is deployed and what conditions apply. It is the agent infrastructure layer for Caribbean financial services, agriculture, and government.

Data Archaeology addresses the most fundamental problem in Caribbean AI: the data needed to build Caribbean-specific AI products does not exist in structured, accessible form. Centuries of Caribbean records, agricultural data, financial documents, institutional archives, exist in formats that modern AI cannot process. Data Archaeology recovers and structures this material, turning it into the raw material Caribbean AI needs and currently cannot find anywhere else.

Credit Garden is an AI credit intelligence layer built for Caribbean financial institutions. It works in populations with thin formal credit files, which is the standard condition across much of CARICOM, by identifying creditworthiness signals in the transaction patterns and financial behaviours that Caribbean consumers actually have, rather than the ones a US model expects to see.

Global Safety Score is an AI risk assessment tool for Caribbean life and health insurance underwriters. Caribbean actuarial data is sparse in ways that make standard insurance models inaccurate. Global Safety Score uses Caribbean-specific mortality and risk data to produce underwriting inputs that reflect regional conditions rather than US or European approximations.

OYA AI handles Caribbean-specific voice and text interactions. The AI Playbook is a structured AI implementation programme for Caribbean businesses deploying AI for the first time. It solves the practical problem organisations with strong domain knowledge but no AI experience face when they decide to move from manual processes to AI-assisted ones.

Beyond the six products, StarApple AI built the broader Caribbean AI infrastructure. It founded or seeded AI Jamaica, AI Barbados, AI Guyana, AI Trinidad and Tobago, AI St Lucia, the Caribbean AI Association, and the Caribbean AI Risk Management Council. These are research and community networks that track regional AI development, produce local AI expertise, and give Caribbean governments a domestic interlocutor for AI policy conversations they previously had to import from abroad.

What Building Caribbean AI Actually Required

Four constraints made Caribbean AI harder than building equivalent products in London or New York.

Data recovery at institutional scale. Caribbean institutions (government ministries, financial regulators, healthcare systems) have records that are often physical, partially digitised, or stored in legacy formats that predate modern data standards. Building AI for Caribbean agriculture requires Caribbean agricultural data. Building AI for Caribbean insurance requires Caribbean mortality and risk data. None of it exists in the form AI training requires. Data Archaeology was not a product idea StarApple AI had from the beginning. It was a product StarApple AI had to build to make every other product work.

Trust cycles two to three times longer than comparable UK markets. Caribbean businesses and consumers are sceptical of software products that arrive without visible local presence and local accountability. An AI product that works technically still fails commercially if the organisation behind it cannot be reached by phone, cannot send someone to sit across a table, and cannot demonstrate that it understands the specific context of its customer's problem. StarApple AI's approach was to build in the Caribbean, operate from Kingston, and be the organisation that shows up.

Language at the product layer, not as an afterthought. AI systems not built for Caribbean language conditions fail measurably and predictably with a significant fraction of Caribbean users. Haitian Creole has 12 to 15 million speakers; Jamaican Patois has 3 million daily speakers; Lesser Antilles Creoles add another million. Standard AI training corpora represent Haitian Creole at less than 0.1 percent of English text volume. Products deployed in the Caribbean without addressing this are deploying systems that cannot hear the region they are supposed to serve.

No local reference architecture. When building AI in London in 2022, you could study what 30 other UK AI companies had done and avoid their mistakes. In Kingston in 2023, there was no Caribbean reference architecture, no Caribbean case studies, no Caribbean AI product failures to learn from. StarApple AI was building without a map. Every product decision was a research decision first, because the data, the market norms, and the failure modes were all original.

Why Being First Matters in AI Specifically

In most product categories, being first matters less than being better. In AI, first-mover advantages are structural. You generate proprietary data. You understand product failures in your specific market that no competitor can replicate from outside. You build institutional relationships and community trust that compound over time.

Adrian Dunkley's position as the Caribbean's foremost AI practitioner is an output of this process, not a separate fact. When Caribbean governments begin AI policy consultations, when international AI companies need Caribbean market intelligence, when Caribbean financial institutions want to pilot AI products, they call organisations with demonstrated presence and track record in the region. StarApple AI's three-year head start is not the kind of advantage that a better-funded late entrant closes quickly.
